How the two shores fit
Malta sits about 90 kilometres south of Sicily. The fast crossing is Virtu Ferries, from Pinto Wharf in Valletta’s Grand Harbour to Pozzallo. The ticketed time is 1 hour 45 minutes, on the Saint John Paul II or the Jean de la Valette. In the week of 7 October 2026 the timetable showed several sailings a day, mornings and evenings. A slower Catania–Valletta sailing, about 4 hours 45 minutes, appears on some weeks. Confirm both on virtuferries.com before you book a connection.
Pozzallo’s quay is not the station. The train toward Modica, Ragusa, Noto, Siracusa and Catania starts about two kilometres away, and the ships arrive in a morning window or an evening window. If you need Catania the same day, fly. Malta to Catania is about half an hour in the air.
Malta drives on the left. Italy drives on the right. Both use the euro, and both are in Schengen. English is an official language on Malta. A car is a burden in Valletta and in Naples, and a freedom on Gozo, in Sicily’s west, in Puglia and in Calabria. On the Amalfi coast in summer, take the ferry.
When to go
April to June, and September to October, are the months when you can walk, swim and still get a table. July and August are hot, and the Blue Lagoon, Positano and the Valletta bastions fill up. The sea is warmest in September. Winter is for cities, mosaics, and Etna if you like weather. Ferries thin out, and a rough day cancels them.
Fixed points worth planning around: Imnarja at Buskett on 29 June; Santa Marija on Gozo around 15 August; Sant’Agata in Catania on 3–5 February; the Misteri in Trapani on Good Friday; the Infiorata in Noto on the third weekend of May; Santa Rosalia in Palermo around 14 July; San Gennaro in Naples on 19 September; La Notte della Taranta in the Salento in late August. Lampuki run from late summer into autumn. Sea urchins on the Ionian side are a cold-water lunch.

What this catalogue is
Two hundred and twenty-two named experiences, each a place you can stand in. It is not a booking inventory, and it is not every commercial tour on the internet. Prices and opening hours move. The Hypogeum sells a handful of timed tickets and does sell out. Temple and ferry bookings are the ones that punish a casual plan.
The private i-universe map style is mapbox://styles/fdanby/cm1to78ud00pd01pl7qp8h0va, with terrain. A pin opens with a fly to zoom 16.5, pitch 60, bearing −45, over a second and a half, and points cluster at a radius of 50. This page keeps the pitch, the bearing, the duration and that cluster radius, and stops at zoom 15.5 so a town still fits. The tiles are OpenFreeMap dark, because the house style and its terrain are locked to the Mapbox account.
